"Looks like the sun's up" was the code phrase Melissa and Leon agreed on to let Leon know it was okay for him to come out and help sweep the area. Now anyone potentially listening in has no idea how many people are still inside the cave, if any! Presumably Melissa wouldn't have needed a code phrase if she had been immediately accosted; she probably would have said some swear words and that would have been obvious enough.
