We as readers have the advantage of being able to reexperience the entire prologue in immobile pen and ink, Melissa just has the fuzzy replay version in her brain that she doesn't know if she can trust because everyone thinks she's crazy and maybe she is.
I think there's also a drive to figure out a clear cut right and wrong side to these sorts of things when there might not be one.
