Nowadays I avoid inner monologues in favor of trying to convey things like anxiety in a completely visual way. I feel like inner monologues in comics can be used too easily as a cop out; the middle set of panels (also, I really like the paneling in the middle of the page) on this page do a good enough job without having to shove a bunch of words into the next panel.
