The "puddle illusions" are just simple mirages, but these folks don't know that and magic seems just as plausible an explanation as any, and Melissa hates that so much.

I relished drawing Melissa's hair differently in this chapter. I don't think anyone is truly prepared for drawing a character wearing the same clothes and hairstyle for hundreds of pages.
